Ss. Peter and Paul, Wolverhampton Wolverhampton
Client: The Parish of Ss. Peter and Paul
The Grade II* listed church of St. Peter and St. Paul is part of a complex of buildings which has significance nationally for its associations with changing attitudes to Catholicism in England. It is the earliest surviving public urban chapel for Catholics in the country.
The Practice worked with the Parish to repair the exterior and subsequently designed a new spatial arrangement for the interior to meet their aspirations for participation and inclusiveness. We have enhanced the natural hierarchy within the Sanctuary and designed a new Altar, Ambo and Tabernacle in marble. The Parish also commissioned sculptor Rory Young to create a beautiful crucifix in polished aluminium; ‘a suspended image of softly shining metal, symbolising a treasury, something precious and hieratical, and the summit of a hierarchy of materials’.
