Hartlebury Castle Worcestershire
Client: Hartlebury Castle Preservation trust
Grade 1 listed Hartlebury Castle was founded in the 13th century and was fortified by Bishop Cantilube (1236-1266) after the Battle of Evesham. The Chapel, Bishop’s chambers and Great Hall were built in the 14th century. During the episcopate of Bishop Fleetwood (1675-83) the castle was rebuilt in red sandstone as a Country House. Until 2007 the Castle was the See house for the Bishop of Worcester.
The Practice were appointed Design Team lead and Conservation Architect to oversee a programme of grant funded repairs and alterations.
In addition to fabric repairs, the project included provision of improved visitor facilities, the creation of spaces for exhibition and interpretation within the historic rooms to provide a new perspective on the buildings diverse history and also extensive remodelling of a 1960 workshop to form a new Café facility.
